Learning Log 1 - Part 1

One of six paradoxes facing HR

As outlined by Ulrich, Younger, Brockbank, and Ulrich (2012) one of the six major paradox in HR are organization and individual. It is important to understand that how employees work together and how the culture of the organization is operated is very important for the organization success. If employees are not happy they will not be able to perform their best and therefore this will hurt the company. To do this, HR professionals should work into always finding a way to improve the organization's culture and encourage employees to work together. There should be a balance among all employees.

Engaged employees work hard. Commitment trends focus on building an employee value proposition to ensure that employees who give value to their organization will in turn receive value back (Ulrich, 2013). Teamwork matters the most in an organization. Without attending to teamwork, workplace, processes, and culture, HR misses opportunities to have sustainable impact. Great individuals who do not work well together as a team or in their organization will not be successful. For example, in hockey, it’s only 22 percent of the time that the leading scorer is on the team that wins the Stanley Cup (Ulrich, 2013). As one of our five core values at work is, “We win as a team”. This could not be any more accurate because we are all working for one end goal and that is for our customers.
